8th grade students work each year on constructing their own dulcimers.
A dulcimer is an Appalachian instrument that is made of a sounding board or box,
trapezoidal in shape, and is plucked, bowed or strummed.

The process begins in the art room with painting the body of the instrument.
Then several sessions are devoted to attaching the fingerboard, bridge,
tuning pegs and strings. Here, they are pictured, gluing all the pieces together.
And voila! They have built their own instrument from scratch.
